New Town – Food stands often accompany powwow events, and a particular food stand has been a staple to the local community who attend powwows in New Town. ‘That One Stand’, owned and operated by Sharon Grey. Her food stand is notorious on the powwow trail and has been making and serving fry bread and other goodies for more than 30 years. The Pandemic has not prevented her from continuing her service.
NO POWWOWS THIS SUMMER
Unfortunately, the powwows are restricted on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation this summer due to the COVID19 Pandemic and mitigation efforts to prevent its spread but regardless, this August, Grey decided to set up and open ‘That One Stand’ for service so the public could come and enjoy the delicious food on the menu. This is the same menu that has and is typically served during summer powwow season.
MENU
The MHA Nation’s reservation is much like any other reservation in that the powwows are the main event during summer. Traveling, dancing, and visiting friends and family – plus eating! The menu varies from your typical powwow food; Indian tacos, fry bread, burgers, hot dogs, cheesy fries, Menudo soup and corn soup upon request.
DISTINCT NAMES
One distinct feature of Grey’s food stand is her apparent pluck for naming entrée dishes after ‘That One Stand’s’ regular customers. This is how the culinary undertaking, the Charlie Moran Burger, was created – this includes four beef patties, cheese, and your toppings piled between two taco-sized fry bread.
FOOD CONTESTS
The Charlie Moran Burger evolved into the ‘Guy Burger’, which is basically, a ‘double’ Charlie Moran – In 2015, a young man ate the entire ‘Guy Burger’ in less than 15 minutes. His record stands undefeated, and many have tried.
