Donna “Dixie”
Howling Wolf
March 3, 1941 – March 3, 2022
Donna “Dixie” Howling Wolf was born on March 3, 1941, in Elbowoods, to Ruth (Packineau) and Jefferson Smith Sr. Dixie was the youngest of 9 children. She attended school in Elbowoods. She, along with some of her sisters, was relocated to California, where she continued her education.
While in California, Dixie met her future husband, Helmuth “Puddin” Krueger Jr, where he was serving in the army. They returned to North Dakota, and they were married in 1956.
During their 36 years of marriage, they were blessed with six children. They lived in several area communities including White Shield. Dixie received her associate degree in accounting and worked as a bookkeeper in several finance departments including at the Garrison Hospital and the New Town Nursing Home, Fort Berthold Community College, Fort Berthold District Court, and the Tribal Finance.
Dixie loved gardening, crocheting, and playing cards. She also raised exotic birds and enjoyed fishing. One of Dixie’s greatest gifts was her generosity. If you asked something of her, she was more than happy to help you out. Her kindness endeared her to family and friends.
Dixie was a shy person by nature, not wanting to be in the forefront. After the untimely death of their infant son William, she began wondering “Why do young children have to die?” This began her quest to find answers. A family friend who was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses shared with her the Bible’s hope of resurrection, that God was not to blame.
On her 81st birthday, Thursday, March 3, 2022, Donna (Smith) Howling Wolf, of New Town, passed away with her family at her side, at a Bismarck hospital. Dixie lost her husband, Helmuth “Puddin” Krueger Jr., in 1992. She later married Rodney Howling Wolf who passed away in 2019. Dixie was also preceded in death by parents, her infant son, William Krueger, her daughter, Melanie Krueger, her granddaughter, Ashley White, and her grandson, Shelton Price; as well as her parents and all her siblings, Lee Smith, Frances Boyd, Rachel Bell, Almeda Baker, Iris Smith, Miriam Wilkinson, Jefferson Smith II, and Shirley White.
