Spring Surprises at Sage Coulee
Fitness Event Attracts Over 50 People to Mile Walk Run and Some Wildlife to MHA Facility in Bismarck
By Logan J. Davis
Last Saturday morning, Sage Coulee ‘Spring Into Fitness’ Walk/Run participants were surprised in more ways than one.
The first surprise was the sub-freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall that greeted them as they awoke early that morning. Then at the end of the one-mile event, many participants got another ‘pretty cool’ surprise. A flock of wild turkeys came out strolling out of the thick grasses and trotted along the northern edge of the course eventually crossing the paths of the last of the fitness enthusiasts that took part in the ‘Spring Into Fitness’ event that morning. Although the energetic turkeys didn’t receive any tee shirts like their human counterparts, the birds were a good sign for those of us who enjoy our wonderful North Dakota wildlife.
Damon Brady is the Exercise and Fitness Specialist at Sage Coulee Outreach and Wellness Center. Brady was grateful for all of the people who came out and braved the harsh elements to get a jump on their individual fitness program. Brady was also very appreciative of the team that came together to help with all aspects of the event. Volunteers registered the participants and gave out the tee shirts

and other volunteers were all along the course and giving out water and encouragement to the walkers and runners. As the event ended, the sun broke through and the temperatures went above freezing, Brady gave out a message on social media where he gave credit to the volunteers and participants. There were over 50 participants who did the one mile, Brady noted.
“We started at ten o’clock this morning and we saw various age ranges from children in strollers all the way to – and I say this respectfully, our elders. That is a good thing because that is what we like to see,” stated Brady in his message. “We have been following COVID precautions and safety protocols where we only send out people in small groups and we will do the same thing next week with the ‘Diaper Dash’ so we don’t have a bunch of people lumped together. Every participant next (Saturday) is where everyone will get an Easter basket. Here at Sage Coulee Outreach and Wellness facility, we are looking forward to helping everyone with their fitness journeys. So, spring into fitness! We will see you hopefully next weekend at our Diaper Dash.”
