Theresa Star Charging 

(Black Stone Woman)

September 17, 1930 – March, 19, 2021

Theresa Star Charging, Black Stone Woman, 90, of Garrison, died Friday, March, 19, 2021 at a Garrison living center.  Theresa was born September 17, 1930, at Nishu, to Phillip Sr. and Kate (Hopkins) Star.  She was an Arikara member of the Three Affiliated Tribes and was adopted into the Hidatsa Waterbuster Clan by Delvin Driver, Sr. She attended school in Elbowoods.  After the flooding of the reservation, in the 1950s, the family moved to Garrison.

Theresa was united in marriage to Kenneth Charging on September 2, 1970 at Stanley.  They blended their families and were blessed with additional children.  They made their home near White Shield where she raised her family and helped ranch.  Kenneth passed away January 3, 1991.  She lived in various places on the reservation including Parshall, New Town, and lastly White Shield.

She enjoyed dancing at powwows and singing at the drums.  She raised a large garden which helped provide for her family.  She loved family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her welcoming smile and warm heart with be greatly missed. Blessed be her memory. 

Theresa is survived by her children, Dr. Karen Star-Perkins-Gillis (John), Teresa Starr, McRoy Charging, Colleen Kate Star, Donald Star Buck, Nita Star, Clovis Star, and Kyle Star (grandson); adopted sons, Larus Longie and Gaillord Peltier; sisters, Janice Star Kerzman and Rhoda Star Crawford; grandchildren, Dean Gillis, Shannon Gillis, Dr. Angelique Gillis, Johnette Gillis, Shari Tsonetokoy, Samantha De La Cerda, Anne Rose Charing and Dylan Charging; and many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth Charging; children, Samuel Lee Star, Mary Kathrine Star, Monte Star, Arby Charging, Woodrow Charging; brothers, McRoy Star, Webster Star, Woodrow Star, Phillip Star Jr., Alphonso Star, Jimmy Star; and sisters, Margaret Star and Ida Abraham.

Funeral: Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 10 a.m. in Old School, White Shield

Burial: Immaculate Conception Cemetery, White Shield
